Arbor Research Collaborative for Health: Senior Research Scientist, Clinical (Ann Arbor, MI)


Arbor Research Collaborative for Health seeks Senior Research Scientists to serve as principal investigators and co-investigators for clinical research projects. These opportunities are for individuals with an MD and at least seven (7) years’ experience in clinical research in primary care, preventative medicine, geriatrics, or common chronic diseases (e.g., obesity, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease). An advanced degree or formal training in clinical research, clinical epidemiology, health policy, or a related field is desired. Successful candidates will contribute to the success of major studies in a dynamic, collaborative setting along with expert clinician scientists, biostatisticians, health economists, programmers, medical editors, and study coordination personnel; and organizational growth by providing clinical research and leadership skills, identifying new opportunities, and securing funding as part of an experienced team with the shared goal to expand our portfolio of high quality research. In particular, we seek candidates with the skills and motivation to expand the Arbor Research portfolio of projects by developing a new clinical research program area aligned with the candidate’s expertise and in keeping with the Arbor Research mission. Substantial resources will be provided in support of this goal.

  • Provide substantial leadership as principal investigator or leading investigator in new and/or ongoing major research projects
  • Provide input into new directions for existing program areas and development of new program areas consistent with the Arbor Research mission and vision statement
  • Lead successful proposals for new research studies that meaningfully support or extend Arbor Research’s portfolio
  • Develop and carry out self-initiated research leading to peer-reviewed publications and/or major reports to sponsoring agencies
  • Direct analysis with the support of a talented multidisciplinary team of individuals
  • Provide scientific and operational oversight for research projects, including the management of individual and team tasks and timelines
  • Provide significant mentorship and/or guidance to the analytic staff and research scientists
  • Present seminars, talks, and lectures externally on behalf of Arbor Research, and internally for staff advancement and education
  • Work creatively to identify additional ways to translate research findings into improving health services practice and policy


Investigators will work with a substantial amount of independence, initiating and guiding their own work with opportunities for mentorship and collaboration among the organization’s methodological and clinical teams.


  • MD or equivalent, with no fewer than seven (7) years of postdoctoral research experience at a comparable research-based organization
  • Established research success, as demonstrated by specific content-area expertise, lead or senior authorship on refereed publications, invited presentations, project reports, and/or reputation as a research scientist
  • Demonstrable scientific independence
  • Established success in a leadership role for research projects, as well as securing funding for new projects consistent with the Arbor Research mission
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a wide variety of audiences, including the health care community, sponsors, and policy makers
  • Strong mentorship and leadership skills
  • Ability to travel, including international, with several nights away from home per year


  • Master’s or PhD in health services research, epidemiology, health economics, health policy or other social science field with an emphasis on research
  • Non-profit experience
